Truman Center announces new initiative to advance DEIJ in nuclear security through funding from MacArthur Foundation.

The Truman Center for National Policy (501c3) is honored to announce new funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
MacArthur will provide a three-year grant to Truman’s nuclear security program to advance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) in the nuclear field. This generous support will enable Truman to engage a range of communities across the country to diversify this critical national security field.
“For too long, nuclear security has excluded the voices of women and people of color,” said Jenna Ben Yehuda, President & CEO of the Truman Center for National Policy. “As we navigate an increasingly complex threat environment and seek to expand diplomatic pathways while reducing the nuclear stockpile and risk of nuclear war and terrorism, now is the time to ensure all voices reach the decisionmaking table. MacArthur’s generous support will enable Truman to make important gains on this critical issue.”
The goal of this project is to build a diverse and nationwide constituency for reducing nuclear risks. We also hope to diversify U.S. nuclear policy, making it more representative of the communities it impacts.
Reducing nuclear risks through the lens of DEIJ connects two broader Truman Center initiatives: pursuing greater inclusivity in the national security workforce, and developing a city and state diplomacy strategy that engages Americans across the country in support of our diplomatic efforts abroad.
With support from MacArthur, Truman will host roundtables, produce white papers, and carry out a ‘Nuclear 101’ training program for Truman Project members and the general public on reducing nuclear risks.
This is a continuation of Truman’s relationship with the MacArthur Foundation, who along with the Ploughshares Fund, supported our Janne Nolan Visiting Nuclear Security Fellow, and broader nuclear non-proliferation work.
