Truman Center for National Policy Receives Two-Year Carnegie Corporation Grant to Support City and State Diplomacy

WASHINGTON D.C. - The Truman Center for National Policy is pleased to announce new philanthropic funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York in support of Truman’s work on city and state diplomacy.

This generous grant over the next two years will support Truman’s project A Foreign Policy for All: Investing in City and State Diplomacy, which will build on Truman’s ongoing city and state diplomacy work by mapping existing networks of city and state diplomacy, highlighting successes and best practices, and creating new opportunities for cities and states to deepen their diplomatic engagements.

Truman’s research and advocacy on city and state diplomacy has already produced significant policy impact. The U.S. Department of State recently announced the creation of a new Unit for Subnational Diplomacy and established the role of Special Representative for Subnational Diplomacy, acting on two of the key recommendations in the Truman Center’s June 2022 report “Broadening Diplomatic Engagement Across America.

“Truman has long highlighted the national security benefits of U.S. cities and states engaging in direct diplomacy, ” said Truman Center President and CEO Jenna Ben-Yehuda. “There is a new multilateralism growing within the United States and around the world as mayors, governors, and state officials increasingly function as diplomats. I thank Carnegie Corporation for its generous support to Truman, and look forward to our experts and members continuing to examine how cities, states, tribes, and civil society entities can engage with international counterparts to enhance our prosperity and security.”
