Statement from Truman Center for National Policy on Joseph Biggs Jan. 6 sentencing

August 31, 2023 – The January 6th insurrection was a dark day for our democracy, and justice continues to be served. Today, Joseph Biggs, a former key figure in the far-right extremist group Proud Boys, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison. This ruling stands as the second longest among the multitude of cases stemming from the Capitol riot, surpassed only by the 18-year sentence meted out to Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the "Oath Keepers."

The sentencing of Joseph Biggs, who held a position of leadership within the "Proud Boys," represents a significant milestone in the ongoing quest for accountability related to acts of seditious conspiracy and other offenses committed during the tumultuous events of January 6, 2021. The substantial duration of the sentence serves as a poignant reminder of the seriousness of the actions undertaken, coming within a year of Rhodes’ sentence. With additional sentencing hearings expected next week for additional January 6 leaders, the legal proceedings continue to unfold.

The Truman Center for National Policy remains resolute in our dedication to defending our national security and upholding the rule of law. We see this as an essential foundation bolstering the global influence of the United States. Our unwavering position underscores the notion that the United States must exemplify the ideals of democracy on the international stage. We firmly assert that no individual is above the law and firmly advocate for the accountability of all those involved in the events of the January 6 insurrection.
