RFE/RL Under Pressure in Russia

The Truman Center for National Policy hosted a members-only briefing, “Under Pressure in Russia” on Monday, June 21, 2021. Truman member and Transatlantic Affinity Group Co-Leader Jeff Mankoff moderated a discussion with Jamie Fly, President and CEO of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Daisy Sindelar, Vice President and Editor in Chief of RFE/RL.  They discussed the rise of Broader crackdowns on press freedom and civil society in Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Authoritarian leaders of the region have ramped up state-sponsored attacks on media, whether it is by requiring U.S.-funded journalists like RFE/RL to register as “foreign agents” or escalating fines. As a result, journalists in the region face significant challenges and threats. In this discussion, Fly and Sindelar will discuss these threats that journalists face in countries like Russia and Belarus, as well as the threats and implications to press freedom in the region. They will also discuss the impact of the Putin-Biden summit and the policy and activism avenues that can be taken to support a free media.
